(CNN) A Hezbollah drone strike on a military base in central-northern Israel has killed four Israeli soldiers and injured more than 60 people, according to first responders and the Israeli military.
The attack, which occurred late Sunday local time, marks one of the deadliest assaults on Israel since the war began last October.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) launched by Hezbollah targeted an army base near Binyamina, a town located about 40 miles north of Tel Aviv and close to the Lebanese border.
In addition to the four soldiers killed, seven others sustained severe injuries, the IDF confirmed. Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service reported that a total of 61 people were wounded in the incident.
Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the strike, stating that a swarm of attack drones had been launched against an Israeli infantry training camp in Binyamina.
The militant group said the assault was a direct response to Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon on Thursday, which, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, resulted in 22 deaths and 117 injuries.
