(CNN) The Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system has been deployed in the Middle East before, including to Israel during a 2019 exercise, according to Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder. However, the decision to send additional US troops to Israel is particularly significant given the rising tensions between Israel and Iran, as the region braces for the possibility of an Israeli strike on Iran, which could further escalate the conflict.
A US defense official confirmed that around 100 American troops are being deployed to Israel to operate the THAAD system. While the presence of US troops inside Israel is uncommon, this number aligns with typical staffing requirements for operating the advanced defense system.
THAAD is designed to intercept ballistic missiles, providing Israel with enhanced protection in the event of an Iranian retaliatory strike following any potential Israeli military action.
